Painted ponies go up and down
Please come visit Peel Gallery’s carnival-themed “Carousel” slideshow and exhibit at The Northside District Restaurant. An opening reception will be held Thursday, October 26 from 6-9pm, and the art will stay in that space through the end of November.
I am happy to say that I will have two pieces in the slideshow and also on the wall. One photograph was taken in Geneva in 2001, and the other, a triptych, shown above, includes images from Florence in 2009. All images were shot on film with my Yashmak-mat medium format camera. When I saw Peel’s call for submissions to a carnival-themed slideshow and exhibit, my biggest problem was deciding which images to submit, there were so many to choose from in my files. I love taking photographs of ferris wheels and all the other rides when I find them. I am attracted to the bright colors and the motion and the fun they represent. Finding so many of these photos made me start thinking about curating a set of them into a small hand-made photobook.
Being in this show makes me especially happy because of its association with Peel Gallery. Peel Gallery is a vibrant art space located on the edge of Carrboro at 708 West Rosemary St., barely over the line from Chapel Hill. What I love best about them is their amazing collection of photobooks. If you are nearby and have never been, please go check out their vibrant art space. And if you can get to The Northside District, go see the whole show! And if you do get to do that, I’d love to hear your thoughts about it.
